Songkhla

Located in Thailand's deep south, this big town offers much much more than visible at first sight. Impressive aquarium, strolls along the sandy beaches (including the famous mermaid statue and the cat and mouse statues) and rewarding views from the top of the Khao Tang Khuan hill, which you can climb by yourself or use the funicular.

For the culture lovers there is the lovely city museum, located quite close to the remains of the old city wall. And of you want to combine sightseeing with a bit of walking, try to find the beginning, the middle and the end of Songkhla's sea serpent, located on its two beaches. Mind you, it's quite a walk.

But there is much more. Visit the nearby Zoo, which spreads over a hilly area providing a "back to nature" feel, or go to Ko Yo, an nearby island which is home to a sprawling Southern Thailand studies museum and some spectacular views on the city and the inland sea.

Still unconvinced? Take a look at some of the photos of Songkhla or read more about this peaceful piece of Thailand here and here.
